In November 2017, the Beyond Border Artists Association of Nigeria, comprising a group of 10 artists, organized a transformative 3-day art workshop at the Correctional Center for Boys in Oregun, Ojota, Lagos.
This workshop aimed to engage and inspire over 800 young individuals within the center. Serving as the Project Manager and one of the facilitators, I had the privilege of guiding these young minds in the realms of drawing and painting. During the workshop, the focus was on the theme “Our Environment,” encouraging the boys to translate their thoughts and emotions onto the canvas. Witnessing their creativity and expressions unfold was truly remarkable. On the final day, an exhibition was held to showcase the artworks created during the workshop. To recognize their efforts, prizes were awarded to the top three artworks, sparking a sense of accomplishment and pride among the participants.
It was a humbling experience to witness the impact of art on these young individuals, despite the challenges of their environment. Through artistic expression, they were able to convey their innermost feelings and perspectives. This workshop not only provided them with a creative outlet but also instilled hope and resilience, reminding them that their current circumstances are temporary and brighter days lie ahead.
